Student teams working on projects for Weldon House are busy with pre-construction tasks prior to their installation date of February 1st,2012. Girls are learning to weld, working with table saws and drill presses, painting and staining, and having a lot of fun in the process. Check project web pages via the "Projects of 2011-2012" to view team experiences and photos.
Day One Installation:
On Wednesday, February 1, 2012, 6 teams of students spent the day at Weldon House installing hanging shelves, safety features, cubbies, a wall mounted folding table, and storage cabinets, as well as establishing an organizational system for incoming donations. Students worked for nearly six hours on a wide variety of tasks and the hum of power tools was heard throughout the neighborhood. The differences in the project areas before and after was striking. We are currently uploading before, during, and after photos, so check back for photos here and on individual team pages to see the results.
A second install day is being planned for the near future to complete projects still in progress, which include a bamboo bike rack for the patio, a second, larger storage cabinet, towel racks for the bathrooms (showing off the team's new welding skills!) and custom blind cabinet storage for the kitchens.
Day Two Installation:
On Thursday, February 16th,2012, Xavier Weldon House teams returned to complete some unfinished projects and to conduct a preliminary energy audit. Only 2 projects remain to be completed - the bathroom renovations and the completion of the large storage cabinet. Students are preparing for a return visit in early March.
