Engineering Design Class Projects: Phoenix Renews- Xavier is working with the community in a project entitled, PHX Renews, where a large vacant area of land on the northeast corner of Indian School and Central is being transformed. Two teams are working to create an economically friendly and sustainable stage. These teams are helping to create an Outdoor Classroom setting and an Interactive Sundial. Another team is working on a Pervious Concrete Demo to explore the benefits of pervious concrete. Bench Seating will also be designed and installed at the lot. And lastly, to represent the hard work and collaboration of the community, a team is creating a Peace Pole Design that will be displayed on the land. XCP Based Projects- A team is working on Improving Lunch Lines at Xavier by making them more efficient. Another team is creating a Telescope Stand Design for the Xavier astronomy club/courses.
Independent Study in Engineering Projects: Xavier Goes Green- Xavier is going green by working on projects that improve the environment and save energy! Project partners, such as Rio Salado Habitat, allow students to use their talents to help create a sustainable community. The Solar Superheroes are designing a portable solar powered battery, XCP XERO Waste helps create a green community by promoting recycling and use of sustainable materials, and Green Wall, which uses innovative garden designs to help cool buildings at Xavier. Computing & Technology- Computing and technology is a new area for project designs at Xavier. Students are able to use their talents to improve the world of computing and technology! The EPICS Laureate Tracker will enable students to track their courses to earn the Xavier EPICS Laureate Degree. The XCP Raspberry Pis are bringing technology to middle school girls. Another team is creating a STEM App that will increase interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Buckyballs and Buckytubes Nanotech Project will bring interest to the field of nanotechnology. All of these projects are in progress and are on their way to making a difference in the fields of computing and technology. Additional Projects- The EPICS Welding Station team is creating a welding station specifically for engineering students at Xavier. Brown Soundproofing team is creating inexpensive alternative methods of soundproofing for rooms at Xavier. International Projects- The Ovens For Ghana team is developing a viable solar oven for villagers served by one of the BVM missions there. This will provide a clean, reliable, and cost effective cooking method. In addition, the team is providing step-by-step video instructions so that the residents can construct and maintain the ovens on their own.
